Arizona Opry Show

For over 22 seasons the Barleen family has fed and entertained folks at their 500-seat Apache Junction dinner theatre. We will enjoy a hearty, home-cooked meal (featuring corned beef for St. Patrick’s Day) and then a Grand Ole Opry style show. Guys and Dolls
Hale Centre Theatre, Gilbert

Today we travel to the Gila River Indian Reservation for a no-host lunch stop and some free time to check out the new Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino. This property houses about 100 pieces of contemporary Gila River art and will contain the largest collection of modern Pima and Maricopa paintings, pottery, weaving and photography along with several dining venues and of course, gaming machines.
Then we are off to Gilbert for a matinee performance of Guys and Dolls. Set against the fast-moving highlights and low life of New York City in the 1940’s, this Broadway musical comes to the Hale Theatre. With classic songs like “Luck be a Lady”, “Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat”, this memorable musical is a winner with every roll of the dice! Come along won’t you?

Biosphere 2 and Cayton’s at Ritz-Carlton Resort

We begin our day with a coach trip to the Biosphere 2 to discover real-time research on the future of our planet as it unfolds in the specially designed mini-world.
We start at the visitor center which contains exhibits and multi-media displays. We then view a movie which describes the past, present and future of the project. Then we enter the Biosphere with a tour guide who takes us inside and under the glass. Here we discover the Biosphere’s “ocean” and tropical Rainforest. Then we tour the basement “technosphere” and into the amazing lungs that help the system breath. (Note: you must be able to walk 1.5 miles and climb the 260 stairs that are spread throughout the structure.)
After our tour we will enjoy a delightful lunch at Cayton’s Restaurant which is located at the Ritz Carlton golf club and tucked into the foothills of the Tortolita Mountains. A stop to walk around the new Ritz-Carlton, Tucson’s newest luxury resort, is on our agenda before we head back home.

Chiricahua National Monument and Sunglow Ranch

The Chiricahua National Monument, located in the Southeastern corner of Arizona, is very scenic and contains history and wonderful rock formations that we will share with you. We make our way to the west side of the Chiricahua mountain range for a delightful lunch at the Sunglow Ranch. Nestled in the folds of the mountains, this sanctuary on 400 pristine acres of oaks, junipers and pines, is a delightful spot for lunch and to explore.
Then we travel into the National Monument and make our way up a winding mountain road to the summit which is Massai Point (elevation 6,800'). What a spectacular view of this Wonderland of Rocks. Two short hikes to check out the forest of rock spires are planned at this location. Come along and explore with us!

Madera Canyon and Arivaca
April 20, 2010 – Tuesday
Today’s tour is all about the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees! Mother Nature really poured on us this winter and the payoff should be big so we put together this jaunt to help us discover these wonderful spots in Southern Arizona.
We begin our day with a journey to the Santa Rita Mountains and beautiful Madera Canyon. Here we will meet with a docent who will share their knowledge about this world-renowned location for bird watching because it is a major resting place for migrating species. Take a short hike and enjoy this mesquite and oak woodland and sycamore-shaded riparian area. We have a box lunch planned for you to enjoy.
Then it’s off to the small village of Arivaca and en route we will keep an eye peeled for the large fields of poppies that are found along the roadside each spring. The Arivaca Cienega Trail is next on our schedule. This easy, paved trail meanders through a rare desert wetlands. Keep an eye out for the unique birds that call this place home. Once in Arivaca we meet with a local historian who will share the unique history of this mining and ranching region with us before returning back to Tucson. (Bring your binoculars!)

The New Musical Instrument Museum
Phoenix

We have a new and exciting place to visit in the Phoenix area that has recently opened. The New Musical Instrument Museum covers over 200,000 square feet and truly celebrates the universal language of music by exhibiting instruments from every country in the world. The MIM will celebrate the contributions each and every country has made to our musical heritage.
On exhibit will be approximately 5,000 instruments and with the use of the most technologically advanced wireless headsets and high-resolution video screens, we will be able to see instruments, hear their sounds and observe them being played in their original settings. We meet with a docent who will do an overview of the exhibits, enjoy a no-host lunch in their restaurant and have free time to explore the galleries. Join us for this new tour to the Musical Instrument Museum of Phoenix.

Kitt Peak National Observatory

Kitt Peak is a great spot to visit - not only for its fascinating science of astronomy but for its lush and scenic 7,000’ mountaintop location!
We will take you up a mountain road to the summit of the Quinlan Mountains which are located west of the Tucson valley. Here we will have an informative walking tour that will take us to three telescopes – the McMath-Pierce Solar, the 2.1 Meter Domed Telescope and the biggie – the 4 meter Mayall Telescope. There are over 20 telescopes on the mountain and Kitt Peak has the largest concentration of astronomical instruments in the world! A stop in their Visitor’s Center will help you understand the focus of the astronomy community! We will also enjoy a delightful box lunch on the mountain before returning home.
(Please note: you must be able to walk short distances to reach the telescopes and there are some stairs to ascend)

IKEA, Arizona Mills and Chandler Fashion Center

Often requested and sure to sell out fast, this trip will take us to Phoenix for a little shopping fun. We begin our morning with a light continental breakfast served on the coach because we need to get an early start!
Our first stop this morning will be IKEA. This store is big! Stock up on home products and accessories or simply browse their "idea rooms". Then we travel to the Arizona Mills Mall where you can check out Nieman Marcus Last Call Store, JC Penney Outlet Store or Saks Fifth Ave Off 5th or any of the other great shops. We will be here for 2 hours.
Then it’s on to Chandler for a 3 hour stop at the Fashion Center Mall. This mall has over 150 stores and dozens of restaurants and of course, Nordstrom! Today is Nordstrom’s Half Yearly sale for women. Grab a quick bite at any of the spots we stop for shopping or have a leisurely lunch at one of the many restaurants you will find. We head home feeling good about our shopping adventure.

Phoenix Theatre

Sure it’s hot in June but why not enjoy these cool activities with us? We begin our day with a trip to Phoenix and settle in for a hearty meal of chicken and ribs at Bill Anderson’s Big Apple, one of the longest operating restaurants in the valley.
Then we take our reserved seats at the Phoenix Theatre for an early matinee show. We love the Phoenix Theatre because of its size – 345 seats and for the quality of entertainment they always bring to the stage. Always . . . Patsy Cline is based on the true story of Patsy Cline’s friendship with Houston housewife Louise Seger. The two women struck up a friendship that lasted until Cline’s untimely death in a plane crash in 1963. The show combines humor, sadness and reality and of course all of the famous tunes like Anytime, Walkin’ After Midnight, She’s Got You, Sweet Dreams, and Crazy – to name a few. Join us!

Join us for a ballgame and cheer on the Diamondbacks. We have reserved seats for this afternoon game at the Chase Ballpark in downtown Phoenix. This state-of-the-art stadium, which is enclosed and air-conditioned, is home to the major league baseball team; the Arizona Diamondbacks. Come root for the home team, grab a hot dog, check out the ballpark and have a great time! With players on the roster like Adam LaRoche, Brandon Webb and Conor Jackson who knows what will be in store for this season. A game against the Cards or the Cubbies always proves to be exciting.
